Informations concerning some school service centres demands
Some members recently told us about their exchanges with the school service centre (SSC, formerly known as the school board) in their territory with 2 subjects.
1- Use of the Notice of Homeschooling form developed by the Direction de l’enseignement à la maison (DEM).
Note that the Education Act only requires that a notice be sent to the school service centre in your jurisdiction. It doesn’t in any way require the exclusive use of the DEM form.
In order to support you in your obligations, we have created a letter template that you can customize and send to the school service centre to which you are attached. You will be better equipped to deal with this type of demand.
For more details on what the law says in this regard, we invite you to consult section 2 of the regulation.
2- The request to register either at the neighbourhood school or at the school service centre (SSC).
Note that according to the regulations, your only obligation to the SSC is to send your written notice. You then have no other legal obligation to send them other documents or to register, unless you want to ask them for services (in which case you will have to fulfill their terms).
So, if you receive such a request, you can tell them that you have fulfilled your legal obligation to send them your notice as required by the regulation governing home schooling, and that you will proceed directly with the ministry.
For more details on what the law says in this regard, we invite you to consult section 3 of the regulation.
Don’t hesitate to contact AQED’s Member Support if you need additional help (keeping in mind that the volunteers are on vacation, so response times are longer than normal).
